Meet and Connect with Shenna Vaughn the Artist Behind Soulful Funk on Canvas at #ThePowerOfConnections2016

Shenna Vaughn is the artist behind what she describes as ‘Soulful Funk on Canvas’. Vaughn’s intuitive abstract paintings tell subconscious narratives of the deep stories of the soul. Her use of warm colors sets the stage for the expression of the personal thoughts that we all confront. Her work invites the audience to enter a personal conversation of reflection and confession. While these subjects are introduced through her particular use of pigments and textures, the symbolism used uninhibitedly exposes vulnerability.dream

I had the pleasure of meeting and connecting with Queens based artist Shenna Vaughn at the I am Woman Conference, hosted by Sylvia High. I am so honored and excited that she’ll be at The Power of Connections, 2016.

I always had a love for art. I remember whenever I was asked “What do you want to be when you grow up?”, I would always say, “An artist, of course!” However, my dream at the time wasn’t considered a realistic future which then took me off track.

Vaughn says,”As I became older, I began to do other things. Circumstances occurred, responsibilities kicked in, and I found myself allowing the masses to tell me what I should be doing along with the fear of being judged. During this time I was miserable, angry and couldn’t even figure out why. I was a closet painter and no one knew I even had this gift. Then one day one of my dearest friends, Leanna, cared enough and introduced me to a transformational workshop. There I was able to find my path again. From that day forward I picked up my brush and never looked back. I started to honor my wants and needs. I decided to be the woman that I didn’t see growing up – painting not only my story but many others with the hope of inspiring others not to give up on their dream.”

12931066_1204445166255234_9037325913868394517_n

Shenna’s use of symbols also acts as both a stabilizing balance and an ingenious hint towards her abstraction. Figures are represented by bold geometrics and hard lines, forcing the content driven work to command our attention. Yet despite the power of this technique, in reality it is only the means to an end. Shenna’s introspective work effectively acts as a reminder that it is important to listen to the story of the self. Shenna’s work has been included in the following:

Meet Joi Stanley-Smith, Workshop Leader at #ThePowerOfConnections2016

Joi M. Stanley, began in the fashion industry where she held the position as President of Shades of Color, Bridal and Formal for nearly 14 years. Her interest in the mortgage industry would later have her spend nearly 10 years as Senior Regional Mortgage Manager.  Stanley would then become the Owner/Operator of First Equity Home Loans in the Retail Mortgage Business for nearly 8 years.

Her passion for people and helping them to reach their desired goals, made it easy in 2006 to launch her Women’s Empowerment Organization Progressive Achievers Inc. (a non-profit). Although she holds several degrees from Rutgers University, her passion for seeing people happy was easy in her decision making for leaving the banking industry.

In January of 2012, she would join “LOC SOC” as Vice President, where she could arrange time to do the work she so desperately loved, and invest more of herself into growing her non-profit organization.  She saw the importance for women to be nurtured regularly, and also began to see the same need in young girls.  In 2010 she would form “The Inspiring Young Mentors” program, and call her girls “Leading Ladies”.

To date, she is busy in what she has a passion for, inspiring, educating and motivating women and young girls. Stanley has added another project to her growing empire: a weekly Monday Morning Motivational call named “Being Your Best” where she serves a Morning Dose of Verbal Caffeine.

Joi is dedicated in her mission and works tirelessly to accomplish the task of helping women and your girls to reach their goals. To learn more about Progressive Achiever Inc. feel free to visit the website at www.progressiveachievers.org.

Courtenay Hall is the co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of BELLA New York, BELLA Los Angeles and Celebrity Page Magazines.

Courtenay is a 1993 graduate of NJ’s Summit High School, the town in which she was born and raised, as well as a 1997 graduate of Muhlenberg College, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in communications. After graduation, she landed her first position at Grey Advertising in Manhattan, and after a year on the agency side, decided to enter the world of publishing. Her first position at a major New York publishing house was with Hachette Filipacchi where she worked in advertising sales at luxury shelter magazines Metropolitan Home and Elle Décor. From there, she moved to Meredith Corporation, where she broke company sales records at the Better Homes and Gardens Special Interest Publications. After a successful venture at Meredith, she eventually accepted a position at Gruner + Jahr and was part of the New York team that launched Rosie O’Donnell’s national lifestyle magazine ROSIE.

Courtenay, always a dedicated magazine reader, began to see that there was something missing in the tri-state area market (NY, NJ, and CT). While there were lifestyle publications in print, she wanted to see one that spoke to all women (not just a specific demographic) about how to look and feel their best, emphasizing “Beauty Defined by You.” This approach set BELLA apart, as Courtenay’s vision was not to tell women what should be beautiful to them, but to include all aspects of beauty within the magazine and let the readers decide for themselves. In January 2011, BELLA New York premiered as the tri-state area’s premiere women’s luxury lifestyle publication, offering a sophisticated combination of fashion, beauty, health, philanthropy, arts and culture, cuisine, celebrity, and entertainment news.

Since founding the magazine, Courtenay has had the opportunity to work alongside notable authors from around the world, A-list celebrities, public figures, and many others. One of her most celebrated memories is the famous July/August 2013 cover story featuring Christie Brinkley and then 15-year old daughter, Sailor. It was the first time the duo ever posed for a cover story together and it made headlines across the globe, including features on Vogue.com, “The View,” and “E! News.” In addition to Christie Brinkley, there have been countless celebrities who have graced the cover of BELLA, including Taraji P. Henson, Rob Lowe, Lisa Vanderpump, Nicky Hilton-Rothschild, Olivia Munn, Donald Trump and Maria Shriver.

In 2015, Courtenay also became a TV Correspondent, where she contributed weekly segments for the nationally syndicated entertainment show, Celebrity Page. Each week, you can find her discussing the latest in fashion, entertainment, and celebrity news or interviewing celebrities on various high profile red carpets in New York and Los Angeles.

The New York Post’s Keith Kelly included BELLA New York in his January 2016 ‘Media Ink’ column, saying “While BELLA Media is not quite a rags-to-riches story just yet; it is at least a successful start-up in a generally unforgiving publishing world.”

Lessons In Sales From My Cat

Crazy Cat Lady Alert!

Being a soloprenuer, the cats of my home are my friends and co-workers. They may not work very hard, but they do work smart. They get what they want and know exactly when to ask for it. There are so many things I could learn from them as a salesperson, here are a few of the best:

  1. Know what you want – Food is generally her target‚ but not always. Sometimes it’s a good scratch she is begging for. She knows what she wants‚ when she wants it‚ and where or who she can get it from. If you don’t know what you want from your customer‚ how are you going to going to get it?

  2. Know your audience – The cat never goes up to my children to ask for food. Why? Because she knows they are not going to feed her. She also knows that if the person who feeds her is in the kitchen she is most likely to get what she wants. If your know who your customer is‚ and where they are located‚ chance are you are more likely to get their attention. Stop chasing everyone‚ and concentrate on the people that matter.
  3. Keep them interested – Playing with a ball of yarn on the floor by my feet is more then just cute‚ it’s marketing. It makes me want to take care of her. A little interaction with your audience makes them want to do business with you.
  4. Don’t be afraid to ask for more – Almost every time I am in the kitchen‚ the cat is at my feet begging for food. There is always the chance in her mind that I will give her a little extra. There is nothing wrong with reminding customers you are there if they are in the mood to make a purchase‚ that little extra May come your way.

What lessons have you learned from observing others? Please share them‚ I would love to hear!
