GirlsHelpingGirls was founded in 2013, by Susanna Manziaris, after she watched the documentary ‘It’s a Girl’, which highlights the global practice of gendercide: the systematic killing of baby girls. According to the United Nations there are over 100 million girls currently “missing” from the world today, as a result of Gendercide. After countless hours researching, Susanna realized that girls were being killed simply because they were not seen as valuable members of their community. The question switched from how to do end Gendercide, to how do we raise the status of women, so they will be seen as active contributing members of society? What started as small awareness campaigns in Toronto, quickly transformed into an organization dedicated to empowering women around the world. GirlsHelpingGirls created the Three Prong Approach to Education which offers full tuition scholarships for girls to attend school, trains teachers so they can best support their students, and finally builds schools so students have a safe and sanitary learning environment. Through application of the Three Prong Approach, GirlsHelpingGirls has been able to support over 240 girls attend school, train five teachers in Afghanistan, and build two schools in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
Susanna is currently a sophomore at Northeastern University in Boston, MA, where she studies Finance, Political Science and Journalism. Founded by Linda Manziaris, Body Bijou is an online jewelry store that donates 50% of all net profits to GirlsHelpingGirls. Body Bijou and GirlsHelpingGirls is a social enterprise that is dedicated to sending girls to school. The work of Body Bijou and GirlsHelpingGirls has resulted in 240 girls attending school, teachers attending training, and two schools being built.
