In this day and age, New Year resolutions have become a thing of the past.  We all know that a 365 –day long-term goal is way too lofty and basically sets us up for failure.  Last year I wrote an article about “one-week” goals. I am a big fan of short-term goals.  As an Occupational Therapist, I want to challenge my patients, YET make goals attainable.  Well, this year I’m trying a new approach.  I’m making a “TO DO” list.

Doesn’t it feel great to check something off your daily “to-do list”?  It gives you such a sense of accomplishment.  It makes you feel productive.  It gives you a sense of competence and capability.  Once you get a taste of success, you are motivated to go forward and do it again.  Are ya with me?

Well, what is a goal exactly? To me, a goal is…FEAR.  And Lord knows I am full of fears. I don’t know where they came from and I don’t care anymore.  I have spent way too much time and money in psychotherapy trying to get to the root of my fears.  I just want to get over them already.  So come along with me.

Step One. Identify a fear.  Some of my fears I don’t really wish to confront.  For example, I’m scared of rollercoasters, and quite frankly, I don’t feel any sense of loss that I’ve never been on one.  Also, I am scared of spiders, but I feel no need to go through some sort of desensitization therapy to get to the point where I can comfortably touch a tarantula.  I’m ok freaking out when I see one.  I’ll live with that fear.

However, something like flying on an airplane is necessary in my life.  It connects me to friends and family who live too far to drive.  Unfortunately, even though I have flown before, as I get older and the more I fly, the deeper my fear has become.  You would think it would be the opposite, but it’s become worse.  Some say that over the age of 40 your fears become more intense.  Some say after you have children your fears heighten because you feel a stronger sense of loss.  Well, whatever it is, I’m going to make that the first on my “TO DO” list.

1. Fly on an airplane

Next fear: Heights. This one has definitely become worse. I swear I just stand on a ladder and I get dizzy. In fact, I can just watch someone on TV up on a ladder and I get dizzy. Perhaps my equilibrium or vestibular system, whatever, has “aged”.  Well whatever it is, I want to do something to confront it.  So I’ve chosen…drum roll…the flying trapeze!  As soon as the weather gets warmer, I’m making an appointment at Trapeze School.  If any of you are interested in taking on this challenge with me, shoot me an email.  I’m planning it around my birthday in March.

2. Soar on the flying trapeze

It has been said that “public speaking” is the #1 most common phobia among us humans.  I am in that club.  Now that may shock many of you who know me as a singer.  I have sung on stage so often and for so many and hardly ever get nervous.  Basically, that is because I have always been confident in what I was singing.  I had the words memorized or lyrics in front of me.  Once in a while I would ad-lib a bit, but mostly I stuck to the script.  When I was singing in bands, if they wanted me to say something on the microphone, be it an announcement or just stall between songs, I became a mess.  I just couldn’t do it. Or I would go the other way and babble, babble, babble until someone would have to cut me off.  That is my “nervous babbling thing” that I have when I’m asked to speak formally in front of people – be it in a classroom, boardroom or even at the Thanksgiving table.

So this brings me to my next “To Do” item.  The idea came to me to give a workshop for those diagnosed with breast cancer and are preparing for their mastectomy surgery. Having gone through a lumpectomy and mastectomy with two additional reconstruction surgeries, I consider myself somewhat of an expert.  In addition, I have a clinical background.  So why not gather a group of women and help put them at ease by educating them, giving them coping strategies and help plan for their recovery? I know that their doctors do their best to prepare their patients, however there are so many details that are overlooked simply because they are not “critical” or medically necessary.  Now, how many breast surgeons are going to remind you to pack an electric toothbrush rather than a manual one, due to the lack of movement you will have with your arm?  This is something that comes with experience and an Occupational Therapist’s brain.  So I will be speaking at various venues this coming year in front of, anywhere from, 2 to 30 people at a time.

3. Speak publicly in a formal setting

The rest of my “To Do” list includes things that I’m, not necessarily afraid of, but things that are challenging for me.  If we really want to psychoanalyze, I’m sure there is fear behind why I have yet to engage in these activities.  But again, I suggest you keep the planet maids on your list “do-able”.   So here are some of my “challenging, yet do-able” list items.

Run a 5K  – Well, if I’m going to do it, it’s gotta be fun and for a good cause. I found the perfect fit in the “Night Nation Run” on May 7th.  The charity the run supports is “Stand up to Cancer”.  Shoot me an email if you sign up!

Ice skating lessons – this is something I did as a kid and always loved.  So I’m going to sign up for a private class, and of course, share my experience with my JGH&W readers.

So what’s on YOUR “to do” list.  Go get pen and paper and start brainstorming.  Or, better yet, use your smartphone to start a list as ideas come to you.  As an alternative to the “New Year’s Resolution”, try picking 4-5 things you would like to do this year that push you out of your comfort zone.  For those of you who would prefer to make vision boards, as you are compiling your pictures, consider your fears.  Remember, a goal is a fear.  As you conquer a goal, you conquer a fear.

Make your 2016 a truly dynamic year and knock off those items on your list…CHECK!

Can You Answer This Question: “What Makes Me Special?”

I wish someone had forced me to think about this harder when I was younger!


If I asked you today to email me and answer this one question, ‘What is Special About You?’ Would you be able to go right to the computer and answer me and clearly articulate what you feel in your gut is special about you?


Do you actually know you have greatness in you?


Think about this for a minute, did you ever just sit down  and think is this all there is? Is this all it could all be? This can’t be all?


Did you have that feeling way deep inside your gut  and realize there is a special purpose for you? Ever  since I was a little girl, I can remember feeling I had a special purpose, I was meant to be somebody. The problem was I didn’t share it, I was afraid to talk about it. But I felt I was put on this earth to do something great!


If you asked me what was special about me I probably couldn’t have clearly answered you. Until recently. I am a leader, not a follower and what makes me special is that I have greatness inside of me and where I am, is exactly where I am meant to be.


We have to take risks to discover our purpose and to achieve greatness, but life without risk is boring, right?

I think that as I am getting older it is easier for me to validate the fact that I am special damn it! I  have greatness inside of me and I don’t have to hide or deny it!


Sometimes it’s fun not knowing what’s around the corner ladies! Remember, life a marathon, not a sprint.

4 Affirmations to Help You Shift the Energy in Your Life and Business


“My job sucks.” “The economy is terrible.” “I haven’t made a sale in weeks.”

If you can relate to even 1 of these statements, I am sorry to say but you have probably become a victim of your own negative thinking.

Have you ever considered that maybe the only thing stopping you from having a life and business you love is precisely that, negative thinking?

Truth: It’s not the lack of resources or the ‘uncool’ mom you had as a kid or the other excuses we use to justify for not having the life we want.

We all have reasons to feel bad at any time during our day. I get it, circumstances change for better or for worse in a flow of events. And naturally, we react to those circumstances just as we’ve been taught to by our families and friends.

So does how we react to any given situation matter? Your reaction is energy and energy is everything.

Everything you see, sit on, feel -the sun on your face, your kid’s laughter, your morning jog, prayer, a kiss…it is all source energy, source energy is where everything and everyone originated.

You are made up of this same energy. Its frequency can be raised or lowered according to your thoughts, feelings and beliefs. Therefore, the frequencies you send out attract similar frequencies. What you put out, you receive…ring a bell?

Each of us has an energy sequence: negative on the bottom and positive on top.

Positive energy includes:

  1. Our brilliance,
  2. Goodness,
  3. Divinity,
  4. Inspiration,
  5. Love, passion,
  6. Optimism,
  7. Happiness and
  8. Joy (our connectedness).

Negative energy includes:

  1. Anger,
  2. Depression,
  3. Sadness,
  4. Guilt,
  5. Pessimism,
  6. Sense of lack -not just from others, but from our source energy.

We go up and down on this energy sequence everyday, depending on our circumstances. We may think or say, “If only I had X, I could be or do X.” And the ultimate joke is that if we ‘get happy,’ our circumstances will change to meet us. Not so much.

According to the Waist Training Center, “moving up on your energy sequence by shifting your energy to a higher frequency and opening up to source energy connects you to your inspiration, spirituality and goodness.” It has the power to change your life immediately!

From the low end of your energy sequence you can’t even think about doing things you love, let alone muster up the energy to go out and find it.

From the high-end of your energy sequence, you’ll get new ideas, tap into your light and inspiration, connect with the people you need to see, and get into the flow of positive energy that guides you through ‘a good day’ and therefore ‘a good life.’

So, how do you flip the funk?

The first step is catching yourself. Then, you redirect your thoughts. Use positive affirmations every time you notice yourself thinking negatively. I personally love these:

  1. I am.
  2. My life is abundant.
  3. Wonderful opportunities are coming into my life today.
  4. Today is a great day because I opened my eyes.

I am pretty notorious for using humor to approach difficult situations, because I open my eyes and my eyesight is actually horrible but I like to humor it, it´s good because I´m using the outback vision protocol to better it. It’s something I learned from my father and incredibly, my children have picked up on it too. Humor is also a very effective way to raise your energy sequence, therefore making you better able to respond to any situation.

I know it sounds easier said than done, but I promise you, these small shifts will help elevate you. Remember, YOU and only YOU are responsible for the energy you bring into your life and your business.

James was diagnosed with T-Cell leukemia in December 2012. He loves to play video games on his computer with his gaming mouse for mac and with the help of sites that teach him how to play Overwatch, also play chess, Nerf gun wars, and go swimming.  James also plays baseball for Little League and basketball for Marlboro Rec.  His favorite foods are pizza, Swedish fish and Kraft macaroni “n” cheese with some fresh fish we got from a service online at https://www.aoseafood.co.uk/order/fresh-fish-online/.  James loves to read and learn new things.  He does very well in school and is part of the Math Gifted and Talented program.  He loves his pet bunny named Lenny and takes him out for “hops” on a leash in the warm weather!!  He has lots of friends and is kind and respectful. James lives with his older brother Evan, Mom and Dad, he always visits john sharkman site to give his dad the best gifts.

The Entrepreneurial Think Tank for Moms in partnership with Shido Martial Arts School in Freehold, NJ held their first  “Family Wellness & Beauty Day” which this year, raised funds for Bullying, We’re Kickin’ It! a National 501 c3 Non-Profit organization, created to empower & inspire childrens’ creativity, imagination, self expression and positively impacting them to overcome negative obstacles that would inhibit them from developing into strong, independent, healthy functioning members of society.
ETTM is a group of mothers on a mission to connect like minded women, network, build relationships and support each other in life and business growth, while giving back to the the community and supporting local small business owners.
We are beyond grateful for all the support we received from our sponsors and attendees, and experts from the Wellness & Beauty Industry who not only make this event possible but also graced attendees with workshops, products and services on behalf of creating awareness for this National Anti Bullying Campaign.

Clothes You Can Live In!

Over the years, I have collected shoes, bags, accessories, makeup… and then I had kids.

Sweatpants and pj’s took on a whole new meaning. All of a sudden they became my IT pieces to lounge around the house in, work in, go run errands in…sleep in. If you’re a mom, I know you know what I mean.

When you’re running around with a toddler and a baby….the last thing on your mind are 4” heels.

But my approach to clothing had not changed post the kiddos.

BULLYING: An ETTMom Shares Her Story

Nothing bring us more satisfaction than giving our members lessons and tools to support their journey in life and business.

Our blogging workshop motivated several of our members to get going on building their online presence. Several have shared their success stories, like One Green Shoe on the Patch; but we bring light to this story in particular from one of our members as we raise awareness on the topic of bullying which she chooses as the first post for her blog.

  • Bullying – The Visible vs the Invisible
I wanted to share how “bullying” can be hidden by our children.
It doesn’t mean you are a bad parent, it just means that you may have taught your child coping skills to help them deal with bullying from school mates. Bear with me as I share some background information..

As a single mom for 14 years who worked full-time trying to provide all of the things that I had when I was growing up and more for my daughter, Belinda. Isn’t that every parent’s wish – to give their child more?  I moved to a double wide trailer in a trailer park in an area that had a good school district, lots of children my daughter’s age and it was affordable.  

My daughter was involved in a lot of activities outside of school – first competitive gymnastics, then field hockey then all-star cheering. This was my way of making sure Belinda stayed away from the “wrong crowd”. She went to public school until she was a Sophomore in HS when she asked to be changed to a private Christian school where our Pastor’s family taught and went to school. Her reasons made sense so we juggled the budget and Belinda graduated from Pilgrim Academy – smiling, happy, ready for college & still living in the trailer park. Belinda traveled 13 hours to go college – Western Carolina University. I was heart-broken that she was so far away but after the first semester, she excelled – graduated with honors in the Honors College program.

Here is when the “clueless mom” found out what had really been happening…My daughter is a social worker that loves working with troubled kids. As she was preparing her applications for grad school for her Masters in Macro-Social Work, she had to write some essays as to why she felt she would belonged in this field. Since I am a grant-writer, she asked me to review her essays (like she usually did) to check grammar, etc.

This is when I found out the “horror” of my daughter’s school years….

Belinda recounts many tales of verbal abuse from school mates because we lived in a trailer park that as the years passed became like the “projects” of the Township. She only invited her closest friends back to our house for sleep overs, parties, etc. I never really thought about it since I was working, juggling her activities and making sure that her homework was done. The truth was, very few parents wanted their children to come over because of where we lived – not necessarily our home but the neighborhood. Belinda talks about how people used to call her “trailer trash”. The outside sports activities along with my example of what a strong woman could do is what she attributes to her success. Some called her a “snob” because she was involved in outside sports.  Then when she became active in church, more verbal abuse came.  Some of her friends from the trailer park fell into the lives that people expected – sexually active, lots of unsupervised parties, drugs, alcohol and more. I was blessed, Belinda didn’t do any of that. 

Many believe that if I was clueless about the verbal abuse, I would be clueless about everything else…My daughter and I had and still have an amazing relationship.

When I asked her why she never told me, her response “I didn’t want to hurt you because I knew you were doing the best you could. The material things didn’t matter because you were always there for me”. My daughter has amazing attributes – self confidence, speaks her mind (sometimes without tack) and is forever looking to help the underserved youth in her community.  She tells me on a regular basis how she hopes to accomplish all that I have both professionally and personally. 

I wanted to share this to let people know that bullying isn’t always visible, it can happen to any child.

As I travel back to our old hometown, I look around and ask my husband – was I that “clueless” about what life was like. His response is always the same – “You did what you had to do to make sure that Belinda had everything she needed even if it wasn’t always what she wanted. As a result, she is a bright, intelligent & confident woman who wants to take on the world to make it a better place”.

Since signing up to be a part of the Family Wellness & Beauty Day for Kickin’ It Kids AntiBullying, God has pressed on my heart to share this story. This is an amazing cause and I truly believe that children who are visibly and “in’visibly” bullied can benefit from this type of program.

Facing Your Fears

Today, I thought it was important for me to share some thoughts with you on facing your fears and crossing over into “The Uncomfortable Zone”.

I thought timimg was appropriate because I can personally testify to the fact that if you are willing to go there, you will not only live through it, you will actually succeed because of it!

Most of us don’t venture out to the uncomfortable zone, why? Because we are afraid. Also because we are too comfortable were we are! But be careful, comfortable is also synonymous to adequate, content, complacent,easy!!!

Right there, when you are trying to grow your business and become successful comfort should be a red flag!

If it was easy and comfortable to become successful wouldnt everyone then be successful?

So, through reading books, going to hundreds of seminars and workshops on self improvement and growth I have learned you must get uncomfortable in order to become comfortable. Make sense?

Example: Did you know people are more afraid of public speaking then dying?

When I first heard that over a dozen years ago…I related to it because… I was!  I would get accelerated palpitations, would turn beet red, talk 100 miles a minute and… if I was REALLY freaked out, I’d hyperventilate! With time, those reactions still haven’t gone away, but with practice and forcing myself to speak in public, it has gotten a lot easier. If I didnt work on that fear, I wouldn’t be where I am in my business now since more than 50% of my business comes from educational workshops on finance!

There are endless benefits to facing what you are afraid of and just going for it! Not only does it help you grow as a person, but you will expand your business and broaden your vision.

Pick one thing that is keeping you from getting to the next level, practice and slowly do it over and over until you are ready to move onto the next thin. Before you know it, you’re at the next level!

If not now, when? Do not let your fears get in the way of your own success!!
